History of The Cheeke and Stodgell Educational Foundation

Scheme – Made by the Board of Education under the Charitable Trusts Acts 1853 to 1925 in the matter of the Foundation known as Dorothy Cheeke otherwise Cheeke's Charity with Stodgell's augmentation.

Foundation – In the Scheme the expression ‘the foundation’ means the foundation of Dorothy Checke, otherwise Cheeke, with Stodgells augmentation in the Ancient Parish of North Petherton, in the County of Somerset. Founded by the Will of Dorothy Checke or Cheeke proved 1 September 1688 and the Will of Henry Stodgell dated 24 June 1701 and now regulated by those Wills as varied by a Scheme of 27 April 1880 of the Charity Commissioners.

Administration and Title – The Foundation and its endowment shall be administered in conformity with the provisions of this scheme under the name of The Cheeke and Stodgell Educational Foundation.

Trustees – The body of Trustees of the Foundation shall, when complete, consist of six persons that is to say: Three Representatives Trustees to be appointed; One by Somerset County Council as Local Education Authority and Two by North Petherton Town Parish Council and Three Cooperative Trustees to be appointed by a resolution of the Trustees.

Application of Income – After payment of any expenses of administration the net income of the Foundation shall be applied by the Trustees in one or more of the following ways. In assisting pupils to attend schools, institutions or classes for purposed of education other than elementary by paying fees or travelling or other incidental expenses or by providing them with maintenance allowance; provided that candidates for these benefits shall be boys of girls resident in the Ancient Parish of North Petherton, who in the opinion of the Trustees are in the need of financial assistance.
